The beloved Cape Wheel, located in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, is temporarily closing. Why? It’s being relocated to an undisclosed area. The Waterfront did drop a hint, though: “unparalleled views [of] Robben Island and beyond”.
The new views are also said to include passing ships to and from the Waterfront and the commercial port whilst retaining views of the city bowl and Table Mountain. By the sounds of it, the wheel is going to be everywhere!
The wheel, which came into operation in 2008, is due to undergo maintenance and will stop operating Sunday the 19 of June. It will be dismantled in mid-June and will be reassembled at the new site, close to the Waterfront’s boardwalk. Additional new activities, like skilled games and food and beverage offerings, will be open in time for the start of summer (November).
The wheel’s current location is also getting a revamp. Its new purpose will be a landing plaza for public transport into the waterfront.
