Disgraced R&B singer, R Kelly, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was convicted in federal court last year on sex trafficking and racketeering charges.
The sentence was handed down in the Brooklyn federal court nearly a year after the 55-year -old singer was convicted by a New York jury even though he repeatedly denied sexual abuse accusations as per Timesnownews.
In their sentencing memos, prosecutors stated: “His actions were brazen, manipulative, controlling and coercive. He has shown no remorse or respect for the law.
“A lengthy sentence of imprisonment will serve to deter others – including those with wealth, fame and the outsized power such status brings – from engaging in similar crimes.”
His legal team pled and urged the court to give him a lighter sentence with a maximum of approximately 17 years as per BBC.
The defense lawyers said the singer deserved no more than 10 years, arguing that his history as an abused child may have led to his adult “hypersexuality,” and that he no longer posed a threat.
