We can all agree that as suffocating as COVID-19 has been, the infectiousness of the cabin fever that came with it has been even more severe, to say the least. So in the spirit of ‘an apple a day’, a dose of ‘getaway’ at Blue Gum Country Estate sounds like an appropriate prescription.
Named after the ancient Blue Gum trees that cuddle it, this rustic country lodge overlooks the Klein River within the valley that descends from the quaint town of Standford just outside Hermanus. The serene beauty of the 13-acre working wine farm alone could cure the claustrophobia of cabin fever.
The family-run estate is rated 5 stars and ranked within the top 15 accommodations in Hermanus on TripAdvisor. With the luxurious yet homely feel that Anton de Kock and his wife, Tarryn, have strived to create, it’s a well-deserved rating indeed.
It’s the perfect balance for any homebody in need of fleeing the city but still wanting to feel cocooned.
Side note for all the winter wanderers and families looking for a school-holiday getaway: They are currently running a Dinner, Bed & Brekkie winter special from R1 950 per night per room.
The estate offers a range of self-catering accommodations. A ten-sleeper villa equipped with master ensuite bathrooms, bunk beds, and two very comfortable lounges.
There are also two smaller mountain-view cottages, one with a single bedroom and another with two bedrooms. Both are equipped with braai areas and fireplaces inside the cottage as well as outside, perfect for cosying up on winter nights.
To cure any sign of lockdown laziness, there are a number of amenities and facilities in and around the estate. On the premises is a swimming pool, tennis court, kid-friendly play areas, and three retail stores stocking pre-loved treasures, books, LEGOs, and more.
The heart of the estate however is definitely Campbells café and deli, serving simple, wholesome cuisine with locally supplied ingredients (disclaimer: the peppermint crisp pudding tastes like home).
For all the wine connoisseurs, the Blue Gum Bar hosts free wine tastings each month featuring their ‘Wine of the Month’.
