It appears the Stellenbosch ‘urination saga’ may finally have come to a conclusion. Theuns Du Toit, the student who was filmed urinating on the belongings of fellow student, Babalo Ndwanya, back in May, has since been expelled with “immediate effect.”
The news follows a lengthy disciplinary hearing which concluded on 23 June. Du Toit has been found guilty of breaking Stellenbosch University’s Disciplinary Code for students in which it found that he had contravened a number of clauses within the code.
“These findings led the CDC to conclude that there is no alternative but to expel Mr Du Toit with immediate effect from the University,” the university said via a statement.
Once he has received the reasons for the decision, Du Toit has five working days to appeal the motion, reports The South African.
Du Toit was temporarily suspended after footage of the incident went viral on social media, however, many called for his immediate expulsion. The University ignored the outcries, choosing instead to conduct its own investigation before making its final decision.
“The University takes a zero-tolerance approach to racism, discrimination, prejudice and conduct which assails the dignity of another person. SU management took note of the sanction imposed and will be studying the details of the CDC’s finding,” said Stellenbosch Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deresh Ramjugernath.
