The South African Weather Service (SAWS) advices residents to avoid any ocean-swimming activities as a Yellow Level 1 weather warning for “Damaging Winds” has been issued for the City of Cape Town and Cape Point in the Western Cape.
As reported by The South African, The warning is effective between 10 am and 23.59 pm for Saturday, 6 August. These parts of the Cape are expected to see oceans with rough and choppy conditions as a result of strong winds.
According to the warning, beaches of main concern include the eastern parts of False Bay, Betty’s Bay, and southern parts of Kommetjie.
“If you are an inexperienced swimmer or have children, it is advised to rather not go for a swim in the sea,” advises SAWS. “If you are planning a beach day this long weekend, Sunday seems like the better day”
Personal watercraft and small vessels are also advised to avoid the open sea and take shelter at a protected bay, harbour, or river estuary as a precaution.
The warning includes:
- Rough and choppy ocean conditions
- Damaging waves which will to lead to difficulty in navigation at sea for small and personal watercraft. This could lead to vessels taking on water and capsizing.
- Localised disruptions to beachfront activities such as kayaking and snorkelling are likely.
