The South African Police in Khayelitsha hosted its very first imbizo, to help end the state of gender based violence in the townships.
The community engagement was attended by men from Harare, Lingelethu-West, Site B and Makhaza precincts.
The aim of the engagement, is to create and enhance active and meaningful participation of men in the fight against Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), Domestic Violence and Sexual offences.
Furthermore engage men who are often the perpetrators of gender based violence, on the role they can and should play, in the preventing and combating of what has been described as the second pandemic in South Africa
According to the latest quarterly crime statistics, it showed that almost 11,000 rapes were reported and an increase of 9.3% in reported crimes between January and March of 2022.
While in Cape Town, the provincial Social Development Department revealed that 401 gender based violence cases were recorded between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022. Which showed an increase from the previous year.
Those included 207 cases of physical violence, 60 of emotional abuse, 35 of verbal abuse or intimidation, 33 of child neglect, and 21 of rape or corrective rape.
