A fire caused by the chip fryer in a coffee shop resulted in a brief evacuation of the Panorama Mediclinic this morning.
According to a statement released by Mediclinic South Africa, the incident occurred shortly before 8am but was soon brought under control
“Emergency services, including the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, were notified and promptly arrived on the scene. The fire was brought under control with a minor flare-up after the initial fire,” read the statement.

Mediclinic further confirmed that while one staff member suffered minor injuries and two others were treated for smoke inhalation, no patients were injured in the incident.
“To ensure the safety of our patients’, various wards in the vicinity of the fire were temporarily evacuated and patients have since been returned to their units.”
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse said crews from Bellville and Goodwood were dispatched to the hospital where the fire started in the kitchen before spreading into the ducts, causing smoke to build up in the corridors.
“A secondary fire was discovered on the ground floor at 8.46am and extinguished with the internal hose reel,” Carelse added.
“We would like to thank all the supporting services for their efficient support in ensuring that the situation was swiftly brought under control,” Mediclinic said.
