Nyaniso Jindela a former Democratic Alliance deputy mayor will go to trial together with his wife Unathi next year for the murder of Cameron Mcako.
Mcako held the position of deputy mayor prior to Jindela from April 2008 until December 2009. He was shot on 15 August 2019.
According to News24 the Jindelas together with Phumlani Sibongo, Bonisanani Fihla, Phakamisa Nkopho, and Kayamandi taxi owner Gladstone Relegu (Relegu now deceased) were charged with the shooting of Mcako on 1 November 2019.
“Mcako’s death followed that of land rights activist Midas Winana. Winana had been a critical lobbyist for “Azania”, a stretch of land next to Kayamandi, which was suddenly occupied. Shacks were built on it.”
“The municipality later bought the land from the owner, the late Stefan Smit. Smit’s wife, Zurenah, former policeman Derek Sait, and Sait’s brother-in-law, Steven Damon, were arrested in connection with Smit’s murder at the farmhouse on Louisenhof on 2 June 2019.”
“Winana and Mcako were reportedly at odds over a municipality decision to move some shack residents so that their services could be upgraded,” reported News24
The Jindelas have been out on bail granted to them by judge Nathan Erasmus.
The bail has been extended to include inter-region travel in December for two weeks.
The trail will take place from 31 July 2023.
