A fire that broke out at the foot of the mountain in Betty’s bay on Friday morning has been contained.
Overstrand Municipality firefighters managed to swiftly secure the scene at around 2pm yesterday. The team remained on the foot of the mountain to monitor for flare-ups.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed.
According to the Overstrand Municipality, “firefighters first on the scene observed that flames were blazing from from an Eskom electrical box, situated in Disa Street, Betty’s Bay”.
At the time of the fire Eskom was notified and arrived at the scene. The power utility confirmed that the power outage resulted from cable damage in the affected area(s).
Due to dry conditions, warm temperatures and strong winds, the FDI index is orange. This means fires develop and spread rapidly.
