Yesterday, Traffic Services clamped down on unroadworthy public transportation in the Masiphumele area. Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith warned commuters to stay away from unsafe vehicles, even if they were cheaper.
“It’s the time of year where illegal operators use unsafe vehicles and without the required licensing or permits, providing “cheaper” transport options to those wanting to travel long distances,” said Smith.
“Three foreign registered buses were found to be in contravention but a crowd of agitators gathered and prevented the officers from enforcing the law, eventually pelting staff with stones.”
Law Enforcement and Metro Police responded, along with the SAPS POP unit. Unable to restore calm despite several warnings, the unrest continued until stun grenades and rubber bullets were used to disperse the group.
Two people were arrested for public violence, while all three buses were towed and impounded.
In January, 17 people were killed in a bus crash in Limpopo, and another 15 were killed in a bus crash in Tshwane in June.
“While our Traffic Services work in line with the National Road Safety Strategy, it is imperative that we improve road safety for all,” added Smith. “We must implore those who are making use of long distance public transport this time of the year- please travel safely and carefully consider the risks that often come along with discounted travel solutions.”
