Twelve years ago, Concerts in the Park was founded as a non-profit organisation as a way to bring people of all races, religions and social statuses together to share in some of the best musical acts that South Africa has to offer.
This unique event takes place in Cape Town’s leafy De Waal Park, where musicians perform on the old Edwardian bandstand.
Concerts in the Park focuses on nation-building with the aim of bringing joy to people’s lives through accessible concerts. Additionally, it promotes recreation in and use of the neighbourhood’s parks.
The company’s founder, Charles Lindsay-Bowman, worked with the City Council Parks Department to make the magnificent Victorian park in the heart of the city a tranquil place for everyone to enjoy. He also served as vice chairman of a park association.
The first featured artist, Hot Water, had about 1,000 fans; the second, Prime Circle, had 8,000 curious visitors of all ages. That is its main focus. The events are about families and their friends, both young and old, coming together in a familiar excitement to experience the best artists South Africa has to offer.
This year, talented students from Camps Bay High and Muizenberg High will also be performing for this year’s competition between local high school bands.
