DA Ward 48 Councillor, Zahid Badroodien, has returned to his post as the City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for water and sanitation.
He voluntarily stepped down from his position in September 2022 amid allegations of electricity meter tampering on his property last year, when he was charged with gross misconduct for breaching the City’s electricity supply bylaw and the code of conduct for councillors.
Badroodien denied these claims.

The disciplinary hearing could not find that he was personally responsible for the tampering and issued a final written warning after the following recommendations from the committee:
- Badroodien be found guilty of contravening the code of conduct.
- Badroodien had compromised the City’s credibility and integrity.
- Badroodien should have been more diligent of property responsibilities as a lawful homeowner.
In a statement released by the City of Cape Town today, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis confirmed Badroodien’s return and welcomed him back into the fold.
‘I have let Councillor Badroodien know that I am satisfied that he now resume his important work as the Mayoral Committee member for Water and Sanitation, effective immediately… I have full confidence that he will be a driving force in delivering on our ambitious infrastructure investments and service delivery priorities with dedication and integrity,’ expressed Hill-Lewis.
