On Wednesday morning, FlySafair put 50 000 seats up for sale at only R9 for any of its domestic flights departing between 3 May and 30 November 2023.
The local airline began operations at 9am, using a waiting room system that gradually allowed people onto the site to ensure it did not collapse from the high demand.

According to airline data, 1 425 378 people attempted to purchase a ticket, nearly 200 000 more than in 2022.
‘We’re pleased with how the sale went this morning,’ Kirby Gordon, FlySafair’s chief marketing officer, told News24 on Wednesday after the airline’s sale.
By 1:50pm on Wednesday, the airline had sold 50 372 tickets via 16 487 individual bookings. Flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town sold the most tickets, followed by flights between Johannesburg and Durban.
According to News24, Gauteng accounted for 49% of all sales, followed by the Western Cape (21%), KwaZulu-Natal (10%) and the Eastern Cape (4%).
Reportedly, 60% of buyers accessed the sale via mobile devices.
FlySafair has sold 150 000 tickets for R1 to R9 in their annual sale over the last nine years.
Those who were unable to obtain a R9 ticket can still save 30% on all FlySafair flights until midnight on Wednesday.
