Jason, Kevin and Tim, three cousins and the creative triumvirate behind Vadivelu on Kloof Street, have breathed new life into the contemporary South African Indian narrative.
They defy categorisation in the realm of culinary innovation and refuse to be labelled ‘Asian fusion.’ Rather, they are steadfast in their commitment to being ‘authentically South African Indian.’

Jason, Kevin and Tim forge their own paths. To put it another way, they do whatever they want. And what they want is to introduce diners to a blend of flavours woven from the ancestral threads of those who sailed to South Africa 150 years ago, their forefathers bound by indentured labour.
These individuals have infused the treasured recipes of their Tamil heritage with local spices and flavours, igniting a culinary revolution that dances with boundless creativity.
The space is decorated with sage and terracotta walls, jungle wallpaper depicting tigers and tropical avian wonders, pistachio banquettes, pale-wood chairs and tables laden with Mervyn Gers tableware.
Vadivelu’s menu maintains its brevity while teasing curiosity and inviting exploration. It’s straightforward, guiding customers through a selection of options; however, it’s subject to change without warning.
One thing is constant: its offerings will promise a harmonious fusion of Indian essence with an audacious spirit.
The epicurean journey begins with an enticing array of street food delicacies appropriately dubbed ‘Attitude Starters.’ These morsels are inspired by Chef Jai’s formative years spent in Tamil Nadu, a southern Indian state, and offer a glimpse into the region’s rich flavours and bold culinary heritage.
The menu offers Tandoori starters that showcase the art of charred perfection, as well as salads and Dosas, Vadivelu’s ‘Savoury Attitude Pancakes,’ Breyani, vegetarian and seafood mains, as well as revivals of classic curries, where traditional recipes are resurrected and presented with a modern twist, offering a taste of nostalgia mixed with the allure of innovation.
Enhance your meal with a selection of sides and conclude with sweet delights.
Behind the scenes, a secret hides, known only to a select few. Jason, Kevin and Tim do not speak much Tamil or Hindi, so their menu speaks English, bridging the divide between tongues and cultures.
For what could be simpler than understanding what dances upon their stoves and graces your plate? Mutual understanding in the language of sustenance.
