Following its successful debut in Pimville, Johannesburg, Red Bull DIY has unveiled its second skate park, this time for the Khayelitsha skating community.
Pieter Retief, an expert on DIY and an avid skateboarder, said, ‘The Khayelitsha projects have been ongoing for two years now, and this space is a new addition to the previous area we built in the Harare neighbourhood.’
Skateboarders from Khayelitsha now have access to a top-of-the-line skate park, allowing for a safe environment for them to refine their skills.

‘”Where to From Here” partnered with Red Bull to provide unique skateboarding spaces where there were none. Skaters can enjoy these obstacles free of charge and on their doorstep,’ explained Retief.
One of the driving forces behind the Red Bull DIY initiative is to revitalise local communities by creating or renovating skateboarding spots.
‘The purpose and goals of these Red Bull DIY initiatives are to provide free and public spaces for skateboarders to enjoy where there was previously no infrastructure,’ Retief added.

The project has also cultivated a relationship between Red Bull and Khayelitsha’s local skate community. Members Asakhe Shaun Ditolo, Oluhle Dash Nkebe, Thando Blom, Sandla Majija, Levi Zisiwe, Aviwe Bathandwa and Chulumanco Chris Diniso have been instrumental in this development.
Looking to the future, Red Bull is keen to further engage with the skateboarding community in Khayelitsha and the broader Western Cape region. Plans are underway for an even larger skate park, subject to the approval of a designated location, which aims to boost the local skateboarding culture.
The Khayelitsha skate park’s unveiling drew a supportive crowd of 20 local skateboarders, highlighting the community’s enthusiasm for the project. It’s evident that the synergy between Red Bull DIY and local efforts is reshaping the skateboarding landscape in Khayelitsha for the better.
Red Bull is reportedly excited to contribute to the skateboarding community’s growth and diversification in South Africa. With continued collaboration with local skate communities, the future looks promising for generating more opportunities and enhancing the sport’s inclusivity.
