According to bystanders, the hiker and his group were ascending Lion’s Head when he lost his footing and fell about 10 metres down before rolling into a fence, preventing him from falling further down the mountain.
Luckily, a pair of American doctors who were also hiking provided immediate medical assistance to the injured hiker while a call was made requesting an emergency rescue.
A crew aboard the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness EMS / Air Mercy (AMS) rescue helicopter was deployed to the location and lowered near the patient.
The medical team assessed and treated the injured hiker before placing him in a stretcher and hoisting him up into the rescue helicopter.
He was flown to a nearby landing zone, transferred to a waiting Netcare911 ambulance and driven to hospital.
David Nel, a spokesperson for Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), stated: ‘As the weather improves and we move closer to summer, we traditionally see an increase in the number of call-outs.’
‘The more popular trails, including Lion’s Head, can be incredibly busy this time of the year and we ask everyone to be careful.’
Nel urged hikers to be patient, to avoid overtaking, and to always keep to the trail.
