A 25-year-old man died in Gordon’s Bay yesterday in what appeared to be a drowning near Main Beach. On Sunday, the NSRI Gordon’s Bay duty crew was activated in response to eyewitness reports of a drowning near the Gordon’s Bay Naval Base.

The NSRI Gordon’s Bay crew responded to the NSRI Gordon’s Bay station 9 rescue base to prepare to launch rescue craft, while rescue swimmers went directly to the scene.
The CoCT (City of Cape Town) Water Rescue Network was notified.

CoCT lifeguards on duty at Gordon’s Bay Main Beach had reportedly just arrived from their neighbouring duty beach and confirmed that an adult male was out of the water, having been rescued by a group of swimmers who had noticed the man not moving in the water and had entered the water to save him.
The lifeguards performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and raised the alarm.
The SA Police Services, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, GB Medsec ambulance services, WC Government Health EMS, ER24 ambulance services, and CoCT Law Enforcement all responded.
Despite extensive efforts by paramedics to resuscitate the 25-year-old man from Athlone, he was declared dead.
Family members who were nearby at Main Beach at the time were taken into police custody.
The man’s body has been transferred to the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
It cannot be confirmed at this early stage if the cause was drowning.
The NSRI commended the eyewitnesses and friends who rescued the man from the water.
