The Parkwood community has reached out to the City of Cape Town to address the sanitation issues at the area’s canal, which has become a focal point for vagrants to defecate.
As reported by The Voice of Cape Town on 26 February 2024, the City of Cape Town has responded to the Jabulani Feeding and Learning Centre, but its team’s previous attempts have been affected by local gangsters attacking personnel. This, in turn, has led to a ‘suspension of clean-up activities’.

Yasmine Abrahams, founder of the Jabulani Feeding and Learning Centre, told Cape {town} Etc that she believes the reason gang members intimidate the workers is because they are not from the community themselves.
There have been attempts from the centre to clean the canal, but they are prevented by a lack of manpower and funding. Abrahams says some ‘youngsters’ are unwilling to help and that there are not a lot of men volunteering at the centre to help with the task.
Abrahams has also voiced concern that the unsanitary conditions of the canal could negatively impact those during the month of Ramadan, which is fast approaching.
She hopes that the City of Cape Town responds in due time to resume clean-up operations.
