Cape Town-based youth empowerment programme Justice Desk Africa (JDA) has been nominated for the Laureus Sport for Good Award, joining several other South African nominees in what has been one of the country’s greatest sporting years.

The Laureus Awards are the most prestigious honour in sport and are decided by the votes of the world’s media.
Laureus Sport for Good supports more than 300 programmes worldwide that use sport to help young people overcome violence, discrimination & inequality.

Six nominees have been selected in each category, and the names of the winners will be revealed on April 22, following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy – the world’s ultimate sports jury, made up of 69 of the greatest sporting legends of all time.

Established in 2013, JDA is an award-winning human rights organisation that operates across various African countries, with the main goal of promoting the power of everyday activists through training and education opportunities.

The shortlist in their category also includes Bola Pra Frente, a programme that uses sport to develop life skills and empower youth in Rio de Janeiro communities; Fundación Rafa Nadal, which uses sport and education to empower vulnerable young people in Spain and India; and Dancing Grounds, a New Orleans-based programme that connects dance and creativity with social justice issues.

Meanwhile, the Springboks have been nominated for this year’s Laureus World Team of the Year Award, following their historic World Cup victory over New Zealand in October.
Siya Kolisi, the captain of that team, has been nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award after returning from a partial ligament tear to lead the Springboks to victory.
South African Kirsten Neuschȁfer has been nominated for the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year Award. She is the first female to win a solo round-the-world race via the three Great Capes.
