Between November 2022 and May 2023, 70 cruise ships entered the terminal, carrying a total of 145 000 passengers and 42 000 crew members.
This performance not only marks a significant milestone for the terminal but also solidifies Cape Town’s position as a premier destination for cruise enthusiasts, providing a substantial boost to the local economy.
In a recently published opinion letter, Wesgro CEO Wrenelle Stander outlined a strategy aimed at propelling growth and attracting environmentally conscious cruise ships to Cape Town. The strategy goes beyond just fixing things like infrastructure and visas.
The plan is to make the experience special, focus on being eco-friendly, and show off the area’s unique attractions. To make it happen, Wesgro created Cruise Cape Town, a team comprising stakeholders from the tourism sector, local government and port authorities, to work on marketing and logistics to support a strong and sustainable cruise industry.

She believes this approach will not only boost cruise tourism but will also bring a significant economic boost to the region. ‘This dynamic group not only markets the province and the city at global events like Seatrade Cruise Global but also zeroes in on the critical logistics that support a flourishing and sustainable cruise industry, with sustainability as the driving force.’
‘Amid heightened concerns about climate change, it is imperative that we adopt a mindful approach to environmental stewardship.’
Stander also proposed an eco-friendly approach for the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, highlighting the potential of smaller expedition ships.
These vessels can explore remote locations, avoid crowded ports and have a smaller environmental impact.
‘In the modern travel landscape, authenticity and untouched landscapes are magnets for explorers. Expedition cruises deliver precisely that, establishing a genuine connection with nature while minimising the impact on delicate ecosystems,’ she says.
‘In contrast to massive cruise liners confined to major ports, smaller expedition ships can delve into the heart of coastal treasures, spreading economic benefits across a broader geographic area.’
‘Imagine a cruise navigating the intricate channels of the Garden Route or gliding along the rugged coastline of the Wild Coast. It’s not just about tourism; it’s about showcasing the hidden corners of SA that often elude traditional travellers, all while maintaining a strong commitment to conservation.’
