A petition against relocating residents from the railway line in Macassar has collected around 4 000 signatures.

According to Peter Helfrich, Macassar ward councillor, residents in the area are ready to protest to ‘express discontent and vehement opposition to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s (Prasa) proposed action’ of relocating households that live near the railway line.
As reported by EWN, the central line has been inactive for more than four years due to vandalism, theft and illegal occupation of land near the line.

Around 2 000 households have been moved from the railway line into the Macassar community. More than 5 000 still need to be relocated.
Prasa’s progress has resulted in restoring operations between Cape Town and Nyanga. However, the line from Philippi to Nolungile still needs to be restored.
The project management committee told EWN that they’ve looked into using land in Macassar as an option, but they haven’t bought any yet.
