Summer with a dose of festive season fun in Cape Town can always be found at the breathtaking Kirstenbosch Gardens.
The massive 528-hectare estate lies east of Table Mountain and showcases an array of indigenous flora and fauna that can be enjoyed while strolling, picnicking, hiking, or attending a concert.
So, if you are looking to spend some alone time or share moments with family and friends, we’ve created a list of all the things Kirstenbosch offers:

The popular Cape Town tourist attraction has picnic options for you to enjoy while appreciating the elaborate garden.
Take in the scenery and enjoy a pre-packed picnic from the Kirstenbosch Tea Room or pack a basket full of your own goodies.
The Tea Room offers great platter options to make your al fresco event even more special, giving you vegetarian and non-vegetarian finger food, as well as different drink options for just R305. Sweets and bread are included in the packages.
Just keep in mind not to bring items that can damage the lawns, such as tents, tables, chairs or umbrellas; instead, opt for picnic blankets to be on the safe side.

Kirstenbosch is also well known for its trails. Start and end a three-kilometre walk from the Fragrance Garden. Enjoy this nature walk with some easy climbing in between.
If that is not challenging enough, there are an additional four hiking trails that you can explore, ranging from easy to challenging. The Silvertree and Yellowood trails are guaranteed to lead to a waterfall, so look out for those as you enjoy a hike through the fynbos. Try the Boekenhout or Braille trails if you’re looking for something simple. No GPS is required because all trails are clearly labeled.

Don’t let snaps and selfies be the only takeaways from your Kirstenbosch experience. Get in some shopping while you are there. If you’re looking for a few cultural or novelty items, the gift shop here will not disappoint. The Natural World Merchants offer natural essential cosmetics, curios and clothes, among other items.

Kirstenbosch is also a great place for kids to learn through play. Artist David Huni has created a Jurassic adventure for children to explore with his dinosaur exhibition situated among the endangered Cycads. The life-size dinosaurs look incredibly lifelike and right at home among the prehistoric plants.
