Following a makeover that left him all but unrecognisable, Shaggy, one of the dogs that was found in a deplorable state in Mitchells Plain by the Animal Welfare Society of SA (AWS SA) on Thursday, has been put up for adoption.

Last week, the AWS SA said they were shocked at what they discovered at the home of an elderly couple after responding to a call for help.
Inspectors were forced to navigate their way through years of decomposing faeces to find a frightened little family of eight severely neglected dogs comprised of seven Maltese poodles and a cross-breed in the back garden.
All the dogs were suffering from acute skin infections, fleas, and severely matted coats that weighed more than their own body weight, painfully weighing them down and cruelly inhibiting their movement. Some of the dogs were blind. Some have missing teeth and all of the poodles have painful ingrown toenails.

It was very difficult to determine Shaggy’s exact age due to being badly neglected and poor dental hygiene.
Most of his teeth couldn’t be saved because of an extremely bad gum infection.
‘He (Shaggy) is feeling so relieved after all his matted hair was shaved and having a dental procedure,’ read a post on the AWS SA’s Facebook page.
‘Shaggy is not a young boy, but deserves an amazing retirement home.’
‘Please rescue him and show him a life of kindness, care and lots of love.’
