On Friday, initial reports stated that “The giraffe that trampled a 16-month-old toddler to death at a luxury lodge in KwaZulu-Natal has been put down.”
Carina Crayton, from the Wild Heart Wildlife Foundation, was directly quoted:
“In tragic situations like this, the animal is almost always euthanised. This is because of the mandate to protect human life. Most of the time, the animal is euthanised during the attack to try and protect those involved,” Crayton allegedly explained.

Later on Friday, Carina Crayton published a statement on the Foundation’s Facebook page, “issued by the Trustees of Kuleni Game Park”.
The Foundation updated:
“We have since been informed by the reserve that the Giraffe in question was not euthanized. We will update if more information comes forward.”
“We apologize for any negative results as a result of what we were led to believe were the facts around this tragic incident,” the statement concludes.
Whether or not the giraffe has been euthanised is now unclear. Cape {town} Etc is working with Getaway Magazine to get clarity, directly from Kuleni Game Park.
This is a developing story.
