After a wildfire led to Helderberg Nature Reserve’s close for the last month, good news beckons.
The scenic spot for picnics, fauna and flora exploration and trails will soon be open again come 1 August.
The time of closure has allowed the nature reserve to get into tip-top shape as the Biodiversity team gotto attend to urgent erosion work and infrastructure safety checks.
According to the City of Cape Town, the scheduled date will have provided enough time for restoration, and the City believes that its teams will be able to have the area safe and ready for the public’s enjoyment once again – including access to the mountain.
Other heroes behind Helderberg’s restoration were the Friends of Helderberg members who worked tirelessly to conduct cleanups and restoration magic.
Post-fire clean-ups, restoration of eroded areas after the heavy rainfalls we saw earlier this winter and rebuilding burnt trails were all part of the action.
For those itching to get back out onto the trails, temporary trail markers that have been placed along routes will guide you toward trails deemed safe for use. Some popular routes are still getting their makeovers, so be sure to check for the signs.
