The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for extremely high temperatures in Cape Town and other parts of the Western Cape on Tuesday and Wednesday.
With temperatures expected to range between 30°C and 40°C, the SAWS warned of an increased risk of fires in several municipalities, according to News24.
Khai-Ma in the Northern Cape and Matzikama, the Cederberg and Bergrivier in the Western Cape are particularly vulnerable, with the Northern Cape’s Dawid Kruiper Municipality facing similar threats.

Given these conditions, the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre has urged the public to exercise caution.
Recommendations to mitigate health and safety risks include the following:
- Limit outdoor activities as much as possible.
- Stay hydrated by drinking ample water.
- Monitor vulnerable groups closely, such as the elderly, individuals with serious health conditions and young children.
- Ensure all pets have access to shade and plenty of clean water.

Residents are advised to adhere to the following fire prevention measures:
- Refrain from starting open fires or leaving any fires unattended.
- Avoid discarding cigarette butts from vehicles or into open fields.
- Do not leave glass bottles in natural areas, as they can amplify the sun’s rays and potentially ignite fires.
The City of Cape Town said that these precautions are important for safeguarding both the community and the environment during this extreme weather event. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about any updates and to respond promptly to any alerts or instructions from local authorities.
