Students with outstanding arrears from last year were not allowed to register this year, and this triggered protests last week.
UCT Communications shared that for two days, 14 and 15 March 2023, the SRC and UCT leadership were in mediation to find solutions to the issue, and a consensus was reached.
The university will therefore “conduct a review in respect of its fee policy, with specific reference to the application of a “fee block” on the grounds of the financial means of the university and the needs of each student, the socio-economic conditions affecting each student, the academic performance of each student, and so forth”.
Exemptions will extend to “UCT students who were registered in 2022, including students in the Graduate School of Business”.
Due to visa stipulations, this will not apply to international students.
