Hermanus is easily one of the Western Cape’s best-kept secrets, hidden under its guise as just a sleepy coastal town. However, there’s much more to the safest town in SA, where millionaires are flocking toward.

What Hermanus actually is, is something of an unspoilt paradise. Hermanus, in its peaceful bubble, is something of an ode to another world in South Africa. One where people can roam the streets freely, where nature’s beauty is admired and not just pulled apart, and where treasures of experiences challenge its ‘sleepy’ personality trait, despite leaving one feeling tired in the best way.
Like its bigger sibling Cape Town, Hermanus is known for its love of the arts and arts in foodie form. There are dime a dozen spots to grab a bite in the soft town, but after exploring a fair share of them, I’ve found that some of the best spots are the simplest ones.
A cave on the coast, a meal overlooking one of the world’s most beautiful golf courses, a quaint and cosy restaurant in the heart of Hermanus and a shoreline favourite. Here are 4 must-try dining spots in Hermanus:
1.Bietang’s Cave Restaurant & Wine Bar
‘Extreme dining’ in one of the calmest places on Earth is exactly what you’ll find at Bientang’s Cave Restaurant & Wine Bar, renowned for being one of the best whale-watching spots on the planet. The ‘extreme’ part comes from the experience of dining right on the rocks with the ocean’s hum and roar right at your feet. Watch as the waves rise and fall as you enjoy an incredible seafood platter and a glass of wine, and get ready to up and move inside the cave if the sea feels particularly feisty that day. To top off the experience, the cave is also something of a fairytale. The century-old cave portion of the restaurant once served as the home of a witch who lived right here in Hermanus at the mouth of the ocean.

2.Lizette’s Kitchen
If it’s a cosy dining experience you’re after with that feeling of being home, then Lizette’s Kitchen awaits your arrival. Serving up some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever tasted, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt, the beautiful farmhouse property near Grotto Beach emulates a feeling of dining nostalgically. Lizette’s is also a fabulous spot to grab a coffee thanks to its coffee bar, where you can start your day with the soft and sleepy rays of the Hermanus sunlight.

3.The Hermanus Golf Club Restaurant
The Hermanus Golf Club Restaurant is a must for anyone who’s craving comfort food with one of the most beautiful views of the mountain range in the Western Cape. Boasting luscious greenery as well as flora to boast, the Golf Club Restaurant serves as a firm favourite for a good ole Sunday Lunch, perfect for the whole family. It’s Pork Wellington will have you singing the chef’s praises, and the best part of the experience is that your wallet won’t sue you for it.

4. Dutchies
A beachfront gem, Dutchies overlooks Grotto Beach from some of the best seats, but mountain views are also on the menu for your eye’s feasting. Sitting under a Milkwood tree, you’ll feel a wonderful sense of serenity at Dutchies – if you can get a table.
Dutchies is a popular watering hole for a reason, and if you are looking to visit owners Joke Gonggrijp and Daan’s well-loved spot, you’ll definitely want to make a booking in advance.
