Last Tuesday evening, a 41-year-old solo hiker on the India Venster hiking trail called for assistance. He was unable to continue due to severe cramps. The patient was hoisted from the mountain and flown to a nearby landing zone by the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness EMS-Air Mercy Service rescue helicopter.
Following his rescue, the AMS rescue helicopter returned to collect one of the rescuers involved in the India Venster Trail rescue operation.
The manoeuvre demonstrates the dedication, bravery and selflessness of those who work tirelessly to keep others safe in the great outdoors.
