A couple who died in a tragic accident on Houwhoek Pass over the weekend have been identified as Ben and Riana Wiid.
A graphic video circulating showed a truck alight, and a man (allegedly Ben) seen running towards the truck. The man then falls to the ground and burns. Terrified onlookers scream as they watch in horror.
It is alleged that Ben and Riana’s car crashed into the truck moments before, sending their vehicle careening off the road and into a tree, killing Riana.
Ben was a retired pharmacist and his wife a retired teacher, who lived in Somerset West. They were driving along the N2 near Grabouw at noon on Saturday, June 13 when the accident took place.
The couple are survived by two daughters and three grandchildren.
