Animal Ambulance, a Pretoria-based 24-hour emergency shelter for sick and abused animals, is desperately appealing to the public for support in feeding their hundreds of rescue animals.

The shelter says its “stress levels [are] climbing” as they cannot afford to pay their food bill and the 400 animals in their care are at risk of going hungry.

The shelter has been hit hard by the COVID-19 lockdown, as many people had to tighten their belts, meaning that they could not make any donations.

“We urgently need to raise R13 230 to pay for our food delivery on Tuesday,” said the organisation in a Facebook post.

Animal Ambulance stresses that it will appreciate any donation, saying: “if only 133 angels donated R100 or if 265 angels donated R50, we could pay the bill.”

“We appreciate all donations, big and small and are Furever grateful.”

Sponsor a pooch, a kitty, or even a donkey, a full bowl of food by purchasing one or more meal tickets through Quicket. Donaters will receive a free limited edition apron with free delivery with every meal ticket purchased.

The shelter still needs 206 people to purchase a meal ticket. The money will go towards their December fundraiser, which will be used to pay their food bill for December and January.

Animal Ambulance purchases its food directly from the factories, which close at the beginning of December and resume operations at the end of January, as they are much cheaper than supermarkets.

Therefore, they are trying their utmost to raise enough funds to stock up on food before the factories close for the year.

Animal Ambulance was established in 2002 and the non-profit organisation receives no government funding. It relies solely on donations to stay afloat. The shelter helps abused and sick animals who would die ‘an often painful death’ without their help.

“We believe in giving all animals a second chance as we are a pro-life shelter,” says Animal Ambulance. Once the animals have been rehabilitated the shelter offers them up for adoption in exchange for a fee.
