The Western Cape Government have welcomed the decision by the Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, to extend the grace period for license renewals up until March 31, 2022.
Mbalula indicated on Friday, August 27, that driving licences that have expired between March 26 2020 to August 31 will now be valid until the new set date. This also includes learner’s licenses, driving license cards, temporary driving licenses and professional driving permits.

According to the Democratic Alliance’s committee spokesperson on Transport and Public Works in the province, Ricardo Mackenzie, the recent announcement will go a long way in giving motorists sufficient time to renew licenses.
” The pandemic has been with us for well over a year now. We would have hoped the national government would have planned accordingly to avoid confusion, long lines and crowding. Nevertheless, we encourage residents to renew their licenses and follow all health and safety protocols. We also ask employers to be more lenient and to allow their employees more time in this regard over the next six months,” Mackenzie indicated.
Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town also confirmed that operating hours at some Driving License Testing Centres have been extended as they look to accommodate everyone.
