A video of a bullying incident which took place at Bishops Diocesan College, Rondebosch, Cape Town, went viral on social media this week, September 2021. The event occurred in the wake of World Suicide Prevention Day.
The clip, which was recorded by a Bishops student shows a boy walking up to a fellow pupil and unexpectedly punching him directly in the face.
The scene ends shortly after the victim is seen crouching over in pain whilst the perpetrator turns and walks away, showcasing a group of bystanders dressed in school uniform.
The incident does not seem to have resulted from any heated conflict, with the victim sitting relaxed on a couch before the hit. Hints of laughter are cut-off by the end of the video.

South Africa’s suicide rate for 2019 has been estimated at 23.5 suicides per 100 000 people, of which more than three-quarters were male, as per the World Health Organisation.
This year’s theme for World Suicide Prevention Day, ‘Creating hope through action,’ emphasises that suicide should not be treated as a taboo subject.
What action will Bishops Diocesan College take?
