The University of Cape Town (UCT) confirmed that a proposal on vaccinations will be considered and discussed on Friday, September 17 in a Senate meeting.
According to UCT spokesperson, Elijah Moholola, the senate will debate the matter at hand as the view of representatives of staff and students will be put to the UCT Council.
A petition objecting to UCT’s senate motion of mandatory vaccinations kicked off at the university, and with over 1 000 signatures, the SRC rejects the motion.
The petition calls on all members of the university community to promote voluntary vaccination uptake, as this remains an individual decision in accordance with constitutional provisions, IOL reports.
In a statement, Moholola goes on to say that: “UCT has noted the surveys being ran by the SRC as well as by the employee union for professional staff. These too are important constituencies in the decision-making process at the university and whose voice will be taken into consideration.”
