6 762 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in South Africa in the last 24-hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 3 540 891.
According to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), the majority of new cases are from the Western Cape 28%, followed by Gauteng 22%, KwaZulu-Natal 18%, Eastern Cape 11% and Limpopo 5%. The Free State, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and the North West each accounted for 4% respectively of the new cases.
The NICD said in a statement on Wednesday, that a further 181 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 92 830 to date.

Hospital admissions have also increased by 316, while the Department of Health has administered at least 72 871 COVID-19 vaccinations on Wednesday. The total number of vaccinations administered in South Africa is now at 28 585 930.
Meanwhile, seven million new cases have been reported across Europe as the region finds itself in the grips of a massive surge of the Omicron variant, which is being described as a “tidal wave.”
According to the World Health Organization’s Dr Hans Kluge, the variant Omicron appears to be sweeping across the region on top of the Delta surge that all countries have been battling to contain since late 2021.
