You’d be forgiven for wondering whether Cape Town’s water is safe to drink in current times, considering that the liquid gas chlorine supply that purifies water for drinking has been short in supply.
However, to put your mind at rest – the Cape Town Municipality has reassured locals that the water is still safe to drink.
What’s going on with the chlorine supply?
The supplier for the City’s chlorine, NCPChlorchem in Kempton Park (Gauteng) faced some blunders in exporting the supply of chlorine due to importing struggles tied to raw materials. This was the result of infrastructure problems at the KwaZulu-Natal ports, and electricity problems at the Gauteng plant according to IOL.
For Cape Town, this meant that we have a supply disruption. The plant is operating again, but as Mayco member Zahid Badroodien explains, it takes time to build up stock reserves as there is a pent up demand from water boards and municipalities.
Residents have been assured that Cape Town does have a chlorine supply at all water treatment plants, however, residents are urged to reduce nonessential water usage.
Coupled with the extra water usage the Cape has seen recently reaching pre-drought levels on a myriad of occasions, reducing unnecessary water usage has become paramount.
