Five people have died in a devastating fire that swept through the Site B informal in Khayelitsha on Friday,18 February.
According to reports, the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were deployed to the area in the early hours of the morning.
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, says upon arrival firefighters discovered an informal structure well alight in Nonqubela.
Carelse indicated that although firefighters managed to quickly extinguish the blaze they came across the bodies of five people who had sustained fatal burn wounds.
However, the identities are yet to be determined as the scene was handed over to the South African Police Service.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, a 16-year-old schoolboy was arrested following a stabbing incident in front of a high school in Woodlands, Mitchell’s Plain.
Police spokesperson, Frederick van Wyk, said police have opened an assault case with the intent to do grievous bodily harm at the Lentegeur police station for investigation.
According to Van Wyk, reports suggest that a 17-year-old boy was stabbed and injured by the 16-year-old boy who was allegedly bullied by the victim.
