Several areas in Cape Town will be without water after the City Water and Sanitation teams initiated emergency repairs to a severe leak on a 915mm diameter bulk water pipeline in Ottery on Sunday, 20 February.
According to the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, teams have not been able to contain the leak despite having shut off the supply to the affected pipe.
“This is as a result of additional flows into the pipe that needs to be traced and shut down. If this is not possible it will mean that a bigger 2400mm pipe is closed in order to reach the pipe to do the necessary work.
“This will impact a large part of our city until such time that the 915mm pipe in Ottery is repaired. This disruption has caused a large and difficult inconvenience to many residents but our team is hard underway to do the necessary work as quickly as possible,” Badroodien said.

Badroodien further mentioned that Strandfontein, Pelican Heights, Pelican Park, Eagle Park, Lotus River, Schaapkraal, Knole Park, Ottery, Grassy Park, Parkwood, Turfhall Park and areas in the far south have been affected.
“Tankers are roaming the affected communities. Please consult your ward councillor for specific locations,” Badroodien reiterated.
