A 23-year-old serial rapist has been sentenced to three life imprisonment terms after being linked to criminal cases dating back to 2017.
Mzwanele Thando Hohlo was sentenced on Tuesday in Wynberg Sexual Offences Court in Cape Town in connection with rape and murder.
Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala noted that former police officer, Captain Herman Hanekom, from Nyanga SAPS family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit had made the connection from various other cases occurring in the Philippi East precinct which matched Holhlo’s modus operandi, as per TimesLIVE.
Hannekom collected a number of exhibits on similar cases and sent them to the SAPS forensic science laboratory for DNA analysis.
“The results revealed that all the cases were linked to a case opened in 2017 at Langa SAPS against Mzwanele Hohlo.”
Despite the mounting evidence, Hohlo was not located until his girlfriend laid charges of assault against him in 2019.
During court proceedings, he pleaded guilty to the charges laid against him.
According to Gwala, one of the victims was stabbed in the head in an attempt to kill her. The serial rapist was sentenced to three life imprisonment terms for rape, two five-year imprisonment terms for attempted murder and 12-month imprisonment for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reports IOL.
