A 36-year-old man was sentenced to three years imprisonment for fraud and contravening the Electronic Communications and Transaction Act (ECT) 25 of 2002.
According to the Hawk’s spokesperson Zinzi Hani, Lunga Bornside’s sentence comes after he was arrested at the Cape Town International airport following tip-off information received by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in 2019.
Hani said, he was then released on R1000-00 bail upon his first court appearance and was rearrested in November 2021 after a warrant of arrest was issued on him for failing to appear in court.
“The suspect pleaded guilty to all charges as he entered into a plea agreement with the state. He was subsequently sentenced to six years imprisonment on thirteen charges of fraud, of which three years were suspended with conditions.
“Furthermore, he was further sentenced to three years on three charges of contravening the ECT Act linked to the card cloning scam, of which three years were suspended for a period of five years,” Hani said.
Meanwhile, Bornside will effectively serve three years of direct imprisonment.
