The City of Cape Town released a statement yesterday announcing the start of the St James beach project, which means that main access to Muizenberg beach will be temporarily closed for a period of two weeks.
The project aims to replace the currently derelict bathing boxes and implement upgrades to the beach area itself, having a widened walkway and picnic area built for beachgoers.
The next step in the project is the concrete works and therefore, for visitors’ safety, the main access underpass next to Folk Café will be closed.
The closure begins Wednesday 2 November and will last for two weeks.
The idea is that the work will be completed in time for the festive and sunny season.
Visiting St James beach is not entirely off-limits; visitors can still access the beach by using the alternative access underpass next to the St James train station, or the St James walkway from Muizenberg.
Signage will reflect these instructions on site, with the access points being clearly indicated.
“St James beach is an iconic beach destination along the False Bay coastline and this project will benefit all visitors and locals,” says the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
He further asks residents and visitors to “please be patient while the project is underway; to avoid the areas where work is happening, and [to] adhere to the signage indicating the alternative access points.”
