According to the SAPS, the elderly couple was busy picking flowers near Big Bay on Saturday when they were approached by the two unknown suspects, brandishing knives.
Their belongings were taken and the elderly man told the suspects that he had a cellphone at home that he was willing to give them.
Police said the suspects then forced the elderly couple into the vehicle and drove to a secured complex in Parklands where the couple lives.
“Arriving at the gate, the security guard noticed the unknown male and female in the car with the elderly couple and started a conversation when the gentleman shouted that they were being kidnapped and the police must be contacted,” police said in a statement.
“The male suspect then reversed and sped away. The security guard immediately contacted Table View Police Station.”
“Upon arrival and questioning the guard, the officers made an announcement to all other stakeholders and police stations to be on the lookout for the vehicle.”
The suspects transported the couple to Delft and various closed banks.
They were then taken to Parow, where they again had no success getting inside a bank in a mall.
However, the vehicle was identified in the mall’s parking lot by the SAPS, who promptly arrested the 26-year-old woman and 34-year-old man, suspected of the kidnapping.
The elderly couple were unharmed but were left traumatised.
Table View Station Commander, Colonel Junaid Alcock, welcomed the arrests and praised the security guard at the complex where the elderly couple reside for his swift action in contacting police and providing a good description of the vehicle and the suspects, which ultimately led to their arrests.
In a separate incident, a 61-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man were arrested in separate dwellings and are expected to appear in court after police confiscated a large amount of alcohol and cash from the suspects.
