With feathers ruffled by the plight of animals in need, Muhammed Asgar Dalvie donned his Captain Crow-a-Lot costume to participate in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon as his alter-ego, a spirited advocate for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
A challenging feat even without a cumbersome chicken suit, Dalvie completed the 42.2 kilometres in a mission to champion animal welfare and inspire kindness by standing for the Five Animal Freedoms that every creature, great and small, rightfully deserves.

Captain Crow-a-Lot and Team SPCA hit the streets of Cape Town with the support of OneDayOnly.co.za, which provided funding for the runner’s goodie bags and t-shirts.
‘Here at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, we’ve made it our mission to ensure that every critter, be they chicken, dog or cat, never has to fret about an empty stomach or a parched beak. We’re talking about good food and fresh water – all the nourishment our furry and feathery friends need to thrive,’ said the organisation.
To initiate his campaign, Captain Crow-a-Lot challenged various other mascots to a sprint along the Sea Point promenade, marking the beginning of his ongoing efforts to boost both awareness and funding for animal welfare.
The race saw a colourful mix of mascots, each symbolising a different cause, united in solidarity for animals in distress.
Captain Crow-a-Lot managed to outpace his competitors, including Themba from Cape Town Tourism, Bingo from the City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management, Mzanzi from the Water and Sanitation Directorate and Blood Buddy from WC Blood Services.
Today marked another milestone as he crossed the finish line of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, feathers and all.
Responding to this achievement, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA commented, ‘Well done, Captain Crow-a-lot (Asgar). You’re a legend. A special thank you to the best friends a chicken could ask for our support crew. We’re all so proud and humbled by the time, effort and risks you took to make a difference for all of us at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.’
