The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced on Saturday that over one million people had registered to vote by the end of the day.

However, another 605,447 people showed up at various voting stations on Sunday to register for next year’s elections.
Political parties were out in force in major cities across the country, with President Cyril Ramaphosa in Tshwane leading the ANC’s voter registration drive, and EFF leader Julius Malema in Gauteng on Sunday.

The DA’s John Steenhuisen was in Cape Town encouraging people to register to vote, while the IFP’s Velenkosini Hlabisa was in KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the IEC, there was a good turnout on Sunday, with more than 500,000 people registering.
However, they recorded over one million voters on Saturday.
‘At the close of Day One of registration weekend, over a million registrations were recorded at our 23,296 voting stations.
‘At 12:30pm today, a total of 609,447 registration transactions had been recorded at voting stations,’ said the IEC.

Furthermore, over 100,000 people registered online on Saturday, marking a watershed moment for the electoral body.
More than 40,000 people had already registered online as of Sunday.

This means that over 1.7 million people have registered to vote during this voter registration weekend.
The Department of Home Affairs opened offices across the country for people to come and collect their identity documents.
Some of the IDs have not been collected in months.
