South African Police Minister Bheki Cele has announced the deployment of an additional 10 000 police officers to boost police presence nationwide and curb criminal activities during the festive season.
Addressing the media on Sunday, Cele declared a firm stance against violence and criminality, underscoring the police’s readiness to confront Cash in Transit (CIT) crimes, a prevalent issue in the country.

With the approach of Christmas, the minister assured citizens of heightened police vigilance.
‘With just 15 days to go before Christmas Day, the police ministry and police management would like to outright assure the nation that all hands are on deck for the police to protect citizens and their properties,’ he said.
This assurance comes as a response to the increased criminal activity typically observed during this time of the year.
Cele revealed the imminent graduation of 10 000 new police officers. This addition comes after a recruitment process that saw 600 000 applications. These officers, graduating from various police academies across the country, will increase police visibility starting 15 December, coinciding with the last passing-out parade in Tshwane.

The recruits have reportedly undergone intensive training, including street survival tactics, firearm handling, legal education and physical fitness.
Cele expressed confidence in the positive impact these new officers will have.
‘These officers will be deployed to sanitise the streets and increase the footprint of the police in all nine provinces,’ he noted.
The deployment strategy focuses on high-traffic areas, entertainment spots and leisure zones.
‘Over time and with guidance, these officers will no doubt be a valuable addition to the service and build on to the capacity of the service,’ said Cele.
