One of the contestants Cessna Lepono told Cape {town} Etc that the one-day event was delightful and a joy to showcase their every day skills.

The proud winner Grace Telena aged 64, walked away with R30 000 in Distell’s campaign to introduce food in taverns for people to stop binge drinking.
Telena who dubbed herself the “winning gogo” blew the judges away with her chicken recipe. She was encouraged to join the competition by her grandchildren.

According to wine.co.za, “This is just the start of a long-term project by Distell, working with shebeen owners and taverners alike to create an environment of compliance, from a licensing point of view but also abiding by the rules; ie not allowing those under 18 to drink, ensuring people don’t drink in excess and also practically ensuring the taverners provide a food offering, which will not only assist in the responsible consumption of alcohol but also create opportunities for further job creation and improved profitability.”
Drinks Federation of South Africa chairperson, Monhla Hlahla, Pete Goffe-Wood and Bennie Masekwameng were the judges at the event.
Other sponsors of the Mzansi Tarven Chef Cook-off were Nederburg Wines and the National Liquor Traders.
