As part of the new District Six Homecoming Centre cultural venue’s launch celebration, a new exhibition is opening today at the centre.
Salon Afrique – a Homecoming Reimagined is a curated exhibition and immersive journey by artists, Beathur Mgoza Baker and Sara Bint Moneer Khan that aims to unite people from different backgrounds and diverse cultures from all over the continent through visual art.
“This exhibition and accompanying cultural program, explores critical questions through the work of contemporary visual artists, filmmakers, cultural thinkers, and performers, creates a space for dialogue and sharing at a time when our country is struggling to provide Africans with a sense of belonging – bringing them together as a community at the salon,” they stated.
The exhibition is inspired by the historical space and symbolic role of District Six as a unique place of nit only integration but storytelling and negating difference to enable belonging. It uses the magnificent landscape of the Mothercity as a canvas to welcome people to engage in a visual art programme that opens a safe space to reflect back on history and the knowledge learned in the past while looking ahead with hope and optimism.
The centre stated: “A salon, in true African spirit, is a gathering place for culture, storytelling, and community togetherness. The Cape Town Homecoming Centre is pleased to present a specially curated exhibition and immersive journey by Beathur Mgoza Baker and Sara Bint Moneer Khan that unites diverse cultures from across the African continent through visual art in our home – a site of hope, remembrance, and belonging.”
It features artists including, among others, Segun Aiyesan, Imraan Christian, Zanele Muholi, Haroon Gunn Salie, George Hallettt, Suleiman Christian, Timi Kakandar, David Chinyama, King Debs, Thania Petersen, Hasan Essop, Omar Badsha, Husein Essop, Skumbuzo Vabaza, Theophilus Tetteh, George Masarira, Lisolomzi Pikoli, Nandipha Jantjies.
