Carolina Ödman-Govender was an associate professor at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) who reshaped the way science is communicated to the public. She passed away in November 2022 at the age of 48 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2018.
Professor Ödman-Govender was recognised for her progressive work in the field of science communications and astronomy development and has been the recipient of many accolades and awards.
As part of a tribute, her friends and colleagues recommended that an asteroid be named after her.
Professor of astrophysics and science communication Katrien Kolenberg said, “The idea was discussed amongst her friends after Carolina passed away and the suggestion was made that it would really be nice to have an asteroid named after her.”
Professor Kolenberg enlisted a scientist who finds asteroids to come up with a list of potential asteroids to choose from.
Kevin Govender, Professor Ödman-Govender’s husband, chose an asteroid from the list that was discovered in the month he met his wife, a significant moment in their lives.
Kevin Govender said: “Our love story began in October 2006 when our work in astronomy brought us together. A story that gave rise to two amazing humans – our kids – in whom Carolina lives on. It was appropriate that this asteroid, discovered in that same month, now bears her name, celebrating forever her legacy among the stars”.
