A talented 11-year-old dancer from Mitchells Plain is set to shine on the international stage as she gears up to represent South Africa at the Hip Hop Unite World Championships OBIDOS in Portugal next month.
Micah Jacobs, a Grade 5 student at Montagu Primary School in Mitchells Plain, possesses a natural flair for dancing that has been evident since she was just 7 years old.

While honing her skills as a member of the Youth Development Academy, Micah’s talent was recognised when she was chosen to be part of the South African contingent for the Hip Hop Unite World Championships OBIDOS, scheduled to take place from 26 to 28 October 2023.
Her qualification was secured during the SASAFF Hip Hop Championships held in Cape Town in June, as confirmed by the South African Sports Aerobics and Fitness Federation (SASAFF).
In Portugal, Micah will compete in the Youth Solo Battles Division. Accompanying her on this adventure is her dedicated coach, Kim Cassels, who will also earn SASAFF colours for her role in Micah’s success.
Speaking to the Weekend Argus, Micah’s mother, Nicolette Jacobs-Smith, expressed their family’s immense pride in her accomplishments.
She explained, ‘She has been dancing hip hop since she started school and was taught by her coach, Kim Cassels, the owner of Young Dreamers Academy.’
While their hearts swell with pride, the family acknowledged the financial challenges of such an international endeavour. They have raised R10 000 so far, but the total cost of the trip is R30 000.
Jacobs-Smith remains optimistic, saying, ‘We are so excited at this opportunity, as she would like to become a dance teacher when she grows up. She has an attitude of positivity and avoids negativity. She is the most resilient child I know, and her smile always makes an impact.’
