Dubbed as the Cape’s “first farm”, there are a bunch of reasons to visit Steenberg, which was established in 1682. Unassumingly, it’s not located in the Winelands but 20 minutes away from the heart of the city.
Despite its closeness to the Mother City buzz, the multifaceted farm feels like a world of its own. Between endless carpets of lush lawn and gardens that make you feel like you’re in the Scottish highlands, is Tryn Restaurant – where we’ll be dining.
Going back to the 17th century, Steenberg was founded by Catharina Ras – setting the standard for female-run excellence from the start. Ras was fondly referred to as Tryn, and so, the restaurant lives on as an ode to her.
Today, Tryn is headed up by executive chef Kerry Kilpin, who cooks up authentic dishes with Asian and Middle Eastern influences. Each plate is seasonal, and this winter’s menu promises to warm your soul – alongside the eatery’s roaring fireplace. The setting is as cosy as it is stylish, and the views through the large glass doors really make you feel like you’re in a winter wonderland.
Tryn’s current winter offering includes three exceptional courses for R435 per person. But you can order a la carte or off the casual menu if you prefer. There are options for everyone, including the kids. Whether it’s chef Kaplin’s iconic fried calamari and chips or something as sophisticated as the herb and dijon crusted lamb rack, you’re in for a treat.
Experience the full force of chef Kaplin’s flavour power by diving into three delightful courses. The offering is a steal for the quality of each plate. That’s in addition to the world’s best mosbolletjies and amuse-bouche, which are both complimentary.
The menu is extensive, offering everything from fresh grills to indulgent desserts. A quick glance around the room confirmed the lamb rack and lemon baked cheesecake as firm sweet and savoury favourites. Although the pork belly and warm dark chocolate sphere are also worth mentioning.
In line with the food menu is a hefty drinks list: a wine-lovers dream. A glass of the Steenberg sparkling sauvignon blanc should be mandatory. Don’t be shy to tuck into a craft beer or cocktail though. There’s a gorgeous bar at your disposal.
Dining at Tryn is a fabulous experience. The atmosphere is abuzz – especially on a Sunday afternoon when families and friends flock to tuck into something yummy. Both the setting and the food are sophisticated but warm enough to make you feel at home: a combination that will keep you coming back time and time again.
Tryn is open for breakfast daily, from 8am to 11am. Lunch is on daily from 12pm, and Dinner is served Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm. Bookings can be made online or on 021 713 7178. Find it on Steenberg Road, Tokai, Cape Town.
